Azit® (Azithromycin) - description of the drug

Azit® is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is the first representative of a new subgroup of macrolide antibiotics - azalides. When high concentrations are created in the focus of inflammation, it has a bactericidal effect. The work of Azit® is to stop the growth of bacteria.

Azit® Azithromycin is used to treat certain bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and infections of the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, throat and reproductive organs. Azit® is also used to treat or prevent infection spread by the Mycobacterium avium (MAC) complex [a type of lung infection that often affects people with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)].

Active ingredient: Azithromycin

Azit® 250 / 500 mg For The Treatment of Various Bacterial Infections – Overview

Gram-positive cocci are sensitive to Azit®; Streptococcus pneumoniae, St.piogenes, St.agalactiae, streptococci of groups C, F and G, St.viridans, Staphylococcus aureus; gram-negative bacteria; Hacmophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Bordetella perrtussis, B. parapertussis, Legionella pneumopnila, H.ducrei, Campylobacter jejuni, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Gardnerella vaginatis; some anaerobic microorganisms: Bacteroides bivius, Closiridium perfringens, Peptostreptococcus spp; as well as Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Treponema pallidum, Borrelia burgdoferi.

Azit® is inactive against gram-positive bacteria resistant to erythromycin.

Azit® Azithromycin penetrates well into the respiratory tract, organs and tissues of the urogenital tract (in particular, the prostate gland), skin and soft tissues. The high concentration in tissues (10-15 times higher than in blood plasma) and the long half-life are due to the low binding of azithromycin to plasma proteins, as well as its ability to penetrate eukaryotic cells and concentrate in a low pH environment surrounding lysosomes. This, in turn, determines the large apparent volume of distribution (31.1 l/kg) and high plasma clearance.

The ability of azithromycin accumulates, mainly in lysosomes, is especially important for the elimination of intracellular pathogens. It has been proven that phagocytes deliver azithromycin to the sites of infection localization, where it is released during phagocytosis. The concentration of azithromycin in the foci of infection is significantly higher than in healthy tissues (on average by 24-34%) and correlates with the degree of inflammatory edema. Despite the high concentration in phagocytes, azithromycin does not significantly affect their function.

Azithromycin remains in bactericidal concentrations in the focus of inflammation for 5-7 days after taking the last dose, which made it possible to develop short (3-day and 5-day) courses of treatment.

How should azithromycin drug Azit® be used?

Presentation of azithromycin in tablets, suspension (liquid) with prolonged release (long-acting) and suspension (liquid) for oral administration. Tablets and suspension (Zithromax) are usually taken with or without food once a day for 1 to 5 days. Azithromycin Azit® tablets are usually taken with or without food once a week when used to prevent a common MAC infection, a prolonged-release suspension (Zmax) is usually taken as a single dose on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal). To help you remember to take Azit® Azithromycin, take the medicine at about the same time every day. Carefully follow the instructions on the label of your prescription medication and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain everything you don’t understand. Take Azit® exactly as you were told. Do not take more or less medication and do not take it more often than the doctor says.

Shake the liquid well before each use to mix the medicine evenly. Use a measuring spoon, an oral medicine syringe, or a measuring cup to measure the correct amount of medication. Rinse with water everything you used to measure after taking a full dose of the medicine.

If you vomit within an hour after taking Azit®, contact your doctor immediately. Your doctor will tell you if you need to take a different dose. Do not take another dose unless your doctor tells you to do so.

You should start feeling better during the first few days of azithromycin treatment. If your symptoms don’t improve or worsen, call your doctor.

Take Azit® until the amount indicated in the prescription is finished, even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Azit® unless you experience serious side effects described in the Side effects section. If you stop taking Azit® too early or miss doses, the infection may not fully heal and the bacteria may become resistant to antibiotics.
